Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of unneeded presents can be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to sold via competitive bidding by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The presents are said to be stored in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away for years.
The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on whether a legal value limit was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a unconventional way to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a time in office.
