Gas Detonation Takes 3 Police Officers During Property Removal Action in the Verona Area
A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house close to Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female got detained at the site and a third person who fled after the incident was found not long after. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.
The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location showed the building left as a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.
Background and Motive
The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the property was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member triggered the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno told reporters.
A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
He believed the blast had taken place on a story above the entrance and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed reporters, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
