I Think My First Favorite Game of 2026.
Having experienced in excess of 200 new releases this year, I am officially turning the page on 2025. My annual roundup is published, and I feel content with the final results, accepting that plenty of excellent games probably slipped through the cracks. Now, there's nothing for me to do other than unwind, disconnect briefly, and possibly go for a nice walk in the— well, shoot, found another amazing experience. And just like that, goodbye to my peaceful respite!
An Early Front-Runner Appears
In my more casual gaming time, usually reserved for a selection of unusual games, I've encountered potentially my earliest beloved game of 2026. Sol Cesto is a peculiar roguelike for Windows PC that reimagines a conventional labyrinth explorer into a probability-fueled game of significant risk danger and payoff. Consider this an early adopter's heads-up: If you enjoy being aware of a game before it hits the mainstream, test out Sol Cesto so you can punch a hole in your indie credit card.
A Tactical Genre Subversion
Sol Cesto is a tactical roguelike that's different from everything I'm familiar with. The concept is that you need to explore a dungeon, going down level by level to find the sun, which has disappeared from this mythical realm. Mechanically, this results in some familiar roguelike structure. Choose an adventurer with their own parameters and powers, fight through each level of monsters, acquire some stat improvements (in the form of teeth), and defeat a few biome bosses. Simple enough!
The Unique Central System
How you truly navigate a chamber, though. Each instance you begin a fresh level, you're shown a four-by-four matrix of boxes. Each square either contains a monster, a reward cache, a trap, or a health-restoring fruit. To explore a room, you choose on one of the four rows, but the exact space you end up on is a matter of probability.
You might see a row with a pair of enemies, a strawberry, and a treasure chest in it. You begin with a one-in-four probability of selecting a particular space in a row.
Subsequently, your odds shift. The question becomes: Do you press your luck, or do you opt on a safer line first and try to make safer moves early? This is the tension between chance and safety in action in Sol Cesto, and it's absorbing when you acquire a feel for it.
Manipulating Probability
The roguelike twist is that your probabilities can be influenced over the course of a session by gathering teeth that alter which objects you're more likely to land on. As an instance, you may obtain a perk that will reduce the probability of landing on a trap, but will similarly reduce the odds of getting a reward too.

All selections is a gamble, so you feel ongoing pressure as you navigate a level and decide when to continue selecting or to advance to the subsequent stage instead of pushing your luck.
Items like explosive devices aid in reducing the chance, as do some hero powers. One hero's special power, powered up by making four moves, lets gamers to select a vertical column rather than a horizontal line on a turn. If you play this move wisely, you can save that move for an optimal time to sidestep a dangerous choice. You'll find an astonishing level of strategy in the basic action of clicking.
Future Development
Sol Cesto is still in development, and it has a final update to go before the final game is launched. A new character and a new boss are expected to drop sometime in January. The full launch may not be much later, but the studio haven't set a final date yet.

I have been positively obsessed with it, uncovering each of small details and banking my earned gold per attempt to access a constant flow of meta progression rewards, including additional heroes and items I can buy while playing. I still haven't completed the dungeon, and I have a sense I'll still be pursuing that objective when 1.0 finally hits. Count me in for the long haul.
