Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted the economist's decision to step down.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This development follows after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to make public its records on the case.
The bill will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he plans to endorse the legislation, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.
Email Contents
A collection of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the Congressional committee recently mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to introduce the academic to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers stated he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to persist in corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that he was no longer affiliated with the organization.
The former official joined the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
