NBA game action

Miami recorded eighty-six opening half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat earned a decisive 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a extensive FBI probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.

Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland additionally won their initial match since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.

"We then looked into the matter and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an charge.

"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Terry.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."
