An National Colour Scheme and Iconic Logo

The updated design uses a red, white and blue design to reflect the UK flag and will be used on locomotives, at terminals, and across its digital platforms.

Notably, the symbol is the iconic twin-arrow logo currently used by National Rail and first created in the 1960s for British Rail.

The Implementation Strategy

The rollout of the new look, which was created by the department, is set to happen gradually.

Commuters are set to start seeing the freshly-liveried services on the UK rail network from the coming spring.

Throughout the month of December, the design will be displayed at major stations, including Glasgow Central.

The Journey to Renationalisation

The proposed law, which will allow the creation of GBR, is currently progressing through the legislative process.

The government has stated it is bringing back into public ownership the railways so the network is "run by the people, delivering for the passengers, not for profit."

Great British Railways will bring the running of passenger trains and tracks and signals under a single organisation.

The department has stated it will merge 17 various organisations and "cut through the problematic red tape and accountability gap that continues to plague the railways."

App-Based Services and Current Public Control

The introduction of Great British Railways will also involve a dedicated app, which will allow customers to view timetables and purchase journeys absent surcharges.

Passengers with disabilities passengers will also be able to use the application to arrange support.

Several franchises had earlier been taken into public control under the former government, such as Northern.

There are currently seven operating companies already in public hands, covering about a one-third of rail travel.

In the last twelve months, Greater Anglia have been nationalised, with further franchises likely to be added in 2026.

Official and Sector Reaction

"This is not simply a paint job," said the Transport Secretary. It symbolises "a new railway, casting off the problems of the past and focused entirely on providing a proper public service."

Industry leaders have responded positively to the government's commitment to improving services.

"We will continue to cooperate with industry partners to support a seamless changeover to GBR," one executive noted.
